One of the Luckiest Unlucky People

Liz is a mum of three teenagers whose world revolves around school timetables, weekend sport and the steady rhythm of family life. She works at Bunnings, a job she genuinely enjoys, and measures her days by something simple. Showing up where she is needed.

Nearly two years ago, she was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.

“Going on two years. It’s been a lot to adapt to.”

Motor Neurone Disease gradually affects muscle control and mobility. Movements that once required no thought now require planning. Energy has to be managed carefully. Ordinary tasks take longer than they used to.

There are things she misses. Running alongside her kids. Kicking a soccer ball without hesitation. Walking along the beach without calculating the effort involved.

Everything’s so much harder now.”

Her capacity to work has reduced significantly since her diagnosis. The financial impact has been real. Plans to purchase a newer vehicle that better suited her family’s needs were put on hold as rising living costs and rental increases added pressure.

She now finds herself back in the rental market, adjusting not only to a health diagnosis but to a different kind of financial reality.

But her priorities have not changed.

Family still comes first.

Strength in Perspective

When Liz first received the call to say she had been nominated for Cars for Good, she was overwhelmed.

“What a lovely surprise it was to receive your call today. It honestly made my day regardless of the outcome.”

After looking up the initiative, her first instinct was not expectation. It was humility.

“I honestly don’t feel worthy.”

That response says as much about her as anything else.

“I often say I feel like I’m one of the luckiest unlucky people. Or maybe one of the unluckiest lucky people.”

She holds both truths at once. The diagnosis she never expected, and the gratitude she feels for what remains steady in her life. Her children. Her routines. The moments that still feel normal.

The past two years have demanded resilience, but she does not describe herself as brave. She talks about perspective. About focusing on what she can still do. About continuing to be present.

Her strength shows up in consistency, in patience, and in the quiet determination to keep going.

She wants her children to see that when life shifts, you adapt. You keep showing up.

A Vehicle That Protects Independence

As Liz’s mobility has changed, getting in and out of her current vehicle has become increasingly difficult. What was once automatic now takes careful effort.

In her household, transport is essential. School runs, medical appointments, work shifts and driving lessons shape their week. A safer, more accessible vehicle would ease daily strain and reduce financial pressure, while providing comfort and stability for the years ahead.

Through Cars for Good, the easyauto123 Cannington team donated a 2022 Mitsubishi ASX to Liz and her family.

For Liz, it is more than a vehicle. It represents reliability at a time when so much feels uncertain. It means her children can begin learning to drive in a car that is safe and dependable. It means fewer compromises. Fewer added pressures.

When asked what receiving the car would mean, Liz kept her answer simple.

“It would just put a smile on our faces.”

When the vehicle was revealed, the reaction was quiet and heartfelt. Gratitude more than celebration.

The car does not change her diagnosis. It does not alter the reality of Motor Neurone Disease. What it changes is the everyday. It makes school drop offs safer. Appointments easier. Work more accessible. It protects her independence and eases financial strain at a time when both matter deeply.

Cars for Good exists to stand beside individuals and families navigating circumstances they did not choose.

Liz continues to show up for her children every day.

Now she can do that with greater stability, safety and peace of mind.
