Spur Ranch: Connection Through Equine Therapy

On a quiet stretch of land in Picton, veterans gather at Spur Ranch to reconnect, recover and find moments of calm through the gentle presence of horses. Spur Ranch is a small equine wellbeing program within RSL LifeCare, created by veterans for veterans, focused on confidence, connection and purpose through hands-on horsemanship.

This month, Cars for Good contributed $1,000 directly to Spur Ranch to support the work they do with veterans and the horses that help them heal. The cheque was handed over onsite, surrounded by the volunteers who make the program possible.

A Program Designed by Veterans, for Veterans

Spur Ranch operates as a dedicated team within RSL LifeCare. While general donations to RSL LifeCare are dispersed across the wider organisation, contributions made directly to Spur Ranch stay at the ranch. This means they support the horses, the instructors, the facilities and the veterans who take part.

The program’s equine courses help participants reconnect with themselves, find calm in nature and take on challenges at their own pace. Whether a first handling session or a multi-day riding experience, the focus is always wellbeing and community.

One of Spur Ranch’s volunteers, Kenith, who recently purchased a car from Killian on the easyauto123 team, spoke about why he continues to give his time.

“Volunteers just cannot stop themselves from returning. It is just magic seeing the help and support the horses give to veterans and their families.”

That sense of magic reflects the quiet, meaningful change that happens in a place where veterans feel understood and grounded.

What Our Support Helps Make Possible

The $1,000 contribution helps keep this veteran-designed program running by:

• subsidising veteran participation
• providing feed, care and equipment for the horses
• maintaining the ranch and its facilities
• supporting the instructors and volunteers who guide each session

These contributions make a direct difference, creating opportunities for veterans to feel supported, build confidence and experience connection when they need it most.
